Tara Smith is a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her PhD explores how science fiction can be used to affect social change. Her Honours Thesis examined the ecological messages within Frank Herbert's Dune series. Tara hopes that her work can help science fiction as a genre become more practical to other disciplines and general social discourses. She has published journals on the topic of ecology in science fiction, Olaf Stapledon and conspiracy theories. She is happy to talk about the academic research of science fiction, the theory of science fiction or teach you some Australian slang (e.g. G'day Mate, snags on the barbie, fair dinkum and other beautiful expressions). Hope to speak to you all soon.
