When we discuss culture and world-building, we often discuss the set-dressing, without considering at the underlying philosophy of a culutre. As such, it is easy to assume that certain basic pieces are universal. What can we learn by unpacking real world individualistic cultures (like the US), where the rights of an individual are valued over the community, or communalistic cultures (like Sri Lankha), where community rights and rules are privileged over that of the individual?
