QUILTBAG (Queer, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Trans, Bisexual, Asexual, Gay) characters are becoming more common, but QUILTBAG readers often complain that it's challenging to find QUILTBAG characters that feel real, while QUILTBAG writers say it's challenging to publish a QUILTBAG story outside of specialty publications. Without diminishing the great strides we have already made, how can we do better? How can straight writers better capture the nuance and depth of real QUILTBAG experiences? How can we create space in the publishing world for authors whose take on their own identity does not jibe with mainstream expectations? QUILTBAG writers share our experiences as both readers and writers so we can find answers together.
